Curatorial Manifesto / Testimony

From Misiu to Pan

Maciej Antoni Walczyk

Michał, known to friends as "Misiu," is my only younger brother. He does not master mathematics, linear time, or the concept of money, yet he executes his dreams with an enviable, relentless stubbornness. Having taught himself to create, his visual style materializes the unchanging geography of his dreams.

On a purely physical echelon, his craftsmanship stems from an egocentric sensory motivation. He crafts with linden wood because he loves its organic smell, especially when treated with fire through pyrography. The heavy layers of glossy lacquer covering his figures serve the exact same purpose—he thrives within the raw scent of the wood-finish.

His imagination is stimulated by historical trauma, local Silesian borderland folklore, and dark pop culture icons like Batman and The Witcher—silent avengers who execute missions through actions, not words. To deal with perspective limitations, Michał naturally evolved from drawing to full three-dimensional sculpture inside "The Shed" (Szopa), an atelier provided by our parents. He populates this laboratory of imagination with complex handwritten narratives, assigning sovereign identities and designing warring factions.

Discrimination is the exact word the artist himself delivered as the ultimate key to understanding his art. Looking me straight in the eyes, he broke his standard laconic demeanor to state his message. His universe is heavily dominated by alienation, mixed blood characters, and post-mortem undead entities settling accounts against an incomprehensible reality.

The same profound intentionality governs his moniker. He chose it in secret. "Misiu" is reserved exclusively for the immediate family; from the outside world, he commands absolute gravity and adult respect. Through his raw art, my brother has expanded from a vulnerable child into an uncompromising, breathtaking creator: Pan Miś.
