Prague — Art Brut Praha: “Dual Voices”

From Instagram to a shared show: Jaroslav Diviš → Pavel Konečný → a two-person exhibition in the rough concrete of Art Brut Praha.

Story

Autumn 2022: Pavel Konečný visits us — the first contact between the art brut community and Pan Miś. The chain: posting Michał’s work on Instagram → kindred accounts → Jaroslav Diviš → conversation → Jaroslav informs his curator (Konečný) → the next day Pavel drives from Ostrava to experience PPM in person. The immediate outcome is a duo show, “Dvojhlas / Dual Voices”.

Art Brut Praha breathes concrete, rough textures, a touch of brutalism. The opening: dozens of people, Pan Miś with family — and a violinist in tails who performs instead of playing. Restlessness; spring tingles the senses. An emotional balloon pops. Jaroslav isn’t there; he sends a letter, read by Konečný.

Jan H. Vitvar: “Thirty-year-old Michał Walczyk has had just two exhibitions so far… The third — now — at Art Brut Praha. See his pieces depicting Orpheus & Eurydice, the nephew of the wolf king Lech the Bloody Wolf, the Ouroboros, the White Man-Dog, or a wild fight of a beast with a werewolf.”

“Walczyk doesn’t use canvas but wooden boards. He carves the main contours with a chisel and then paints them. The more dramatic the scene, the more aggressive the cuts — as if the wood were being wounded. Some boards are double-sided and hang from the ceiling; several figures received standalone demonic forms cut again from flat wood.”
