Respekt Magazine — "Exhibition of the Week"
This year thirty-year-old Michał Walczyk has had only two exhibitions so far. The first this spring in his native Wałbrzych, the second in Strzegom. His third, current one is now at the Galerie Art Brut Praha.
On display are his paintings, in which he captured Orpheus and Eurydice, the nephew of the wolf king Lech the Bloody Wolf, Ouroboros, the White Dog-Man, or a wild battle between a beast and a werewolf.
Walczyk does not use canvas for his scenes, but wooden boards. He carves the basic outlines of situations into them with a chisel and subsequently completes them with colorful painting. The more dramatic the scene, the more aggressive his gouges are, as if he were wounding the wood with a sharp tool. Some boards are double-sided and hang from the ceiling in the gallery; for several characters, Walczyk has dedicated separate, standalone figures in the form of demonic entities carved again from flat wood.
This concentrated energy is then balanced in the chamber hall near Resslova Street by the dreamy collages and monotypes of Jaroslav Diviš. Because their author likes to give gifts, visitors can pick one out at the entrance. So do not hesitate to visit before they run out.
